Professional Higher Education in Europe – Characteristics, Practice Examples and National Differences

This publications presents the main outcomes of a partnership working towards the “Harmonising Approaches to Professional Higher Education in Europe” (HAPHE) in 2012-2014, namely the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE) (Belgium), the Baden-Württemberg State Cooperative University (DHBW) (Germany), KIC-Malta (Malta), the Association of Slovene Higher Vocational Colleges (ASHVC) (Slovenia), the Czech Association of Schools of Professional Higher Education (CASPHE) (Czech Republic), TTK University of Applied Sciences (TTK UAS) (Estonia), the Flemish Council of University Colleges (VLHORA) (Belgium), the Assemblée des Directeurs d’IUT (ADIUT) (France), the Conselho Coordenador dos Institutos Superiores Politécnicos (CCISP) (Portugal), the State Higher Vocational School in Tarnow (PWSZ TAR) (Poland), and the Croatian Council of Universities and University Colleges of Applied Sciences (VVIVŠ) Croatia. The presented definition of professional higher education and the accompanying framework of characteristics is an outcome of the collaborative authoring of the HAPHE team.
We would like to express our gratefulness to our external experts, whose knowledgeable contributions have improved the result substantially. Furthermore, this document has been enriched by examples of professional higher education and we are thankful to the above contributors for sharing their practices with us and our readers.
This publication was made possible by replies to our survey from more than 600 European stakeholders and by discussion among 200 participants in 12 national and European validation seminars. It is our pleasure to thank all those who contributed to the research in this form.
